🥧 Ingredients
All you need to make frozen pot pies in the air fryer as your pot pies (still frozen of course) as well as oil in an oil sprayer bottle.
To make frozen pot pies in the air fryer, you'll need:
- Frozen pot pies (any flavor you like will work)
- Suitable oil in an oil sprayer bottle
See the recipe card for precise quantities and complete instructions.
📖 Instructions
With just some oil, these frozen pot pies become perfectly crisp and ready to eat in under 30 minutes.
Remove the pot pies from their packaging and discard any plastic wrap. Keep the pot pies in their silver trays.
Place the pot pies in the air fryer basket, leaving enough space between them for the air to circulate. Spray with a little oil and use a silicone brush to spread the oil.
Cook the pot pies for 20-25 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is hot and bubbly.
Carefully remove the pot pies from the air fryer using tongs or a spatula. Be careful as the filling will be very hot. Let the pot pies cool for a few minutes before serving.
Hint: Test if the pot pies are done by carefully lifting or cutting into one of the pies, the filling should be piping hot and completely cooked through.
🙋🏻♂️ FAQs
Yes, you can cook multiple pot pies at once in the air fryer, but make sure to leave enough space between them for the air to circulate. Cooking time may need to be extended by a few minutes if you're cooking more than two pot pies at a time.
No, you can cook frozen pot pies directly in the air fryer. Thawing is not necessary.
The crust should be golden brown and the filling should be hot and bubbly. You can check the internal temperature of the pot pies with a meat thermometer or by carefully opening the pie. The filling should be at least 165°F (74°C).
🥣 Substitutions
Here are some substitution suggestions for based on what you have on hand.
- If you don't have an oil spray bottle, you can brush the pot pies with a little bit of oil instead.
- If you want to make your own pot pies instead of using frozen ones, you can use your favorite pie crust recipe and your choice of filling. Simply assemble the pot pies as you normally would and cook them in the air fryer according to the instructions above.
Here is a recipe for homemade pot pies pastry from Sally's Baking Addiction that you can also pair with the preferred filling which you can then make in the air fryer!
🥘 Variations
Here are some variations to try out!
- Experiment with different flavors of pot pies. Chicken, beef, and vegetable pot pies are all great options.
- Add some extra flavor to your pot pies by sprinkling them with herbs or spices before cooking them in the air fryer. Thyme, rosemary, and garlic are all great choices.
⏲ Equipment
Air Fryer: This recipe has been tested using two air fryer models:
- Instant Vortex Plus 6-Quart Air Fryer Oven. This air fryer has a useful viewing window that allows you to monitor the food as it cooks. This model always cooks food a bit quicker than my Cosori model so reduce the cooking time as needed.
- Cosori Max XL Large Cooker. It has a capacity of 5.8 quarts which is quite large.
You can use any air fryer for this recipe, but all air fryers are different so adjust cooking times accordingly.
Air fryer temperatures vary between air fryer models so I use an oven thermometer to make sure that the air fryer is the correct temperature for each recipe.
🥧 What to serve with pot pies?
Pot pies are a complete meal in themselves, but if you want to add some extra sides to your meal, here are a few suggestions:
- Mashed Potatoes: A classic side dish that pairs perfectly with pot pies. You can make your own mashed potatoes from scratch or use instant mashed potatoes for a quick and easy option.
- Green Salad: A light and refreshing salad is a great way to balance out the richness of the pot pies. Toss together some greens, veggies, and a simple vinaigrette for a quick and healthy side.
- Roasted Vegetables: Roasting some veggies like carrots, broccoli, or Brussels sprouts in the oven while the pot pies are cooking is an easy way to add some extra nutrition and flavor to your meal.
- Bread: A slice of crusty bread is perfect for sopping up any extra gravy or sauce from the pot pies.
🍶 Storage and Reheating
Leftover pot pies can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, simply place the pot pies in the air fryer and cook at 370°F (190°C) for 10 minutes, or until heated through. You can also reheat them in the microwave, but the crust may not be as crispy.
Don't refreeze any leftover pot pies. Rather make as many as you need at the time and store any leftovers in the refrigerator.
👨🏻🍳 Top tips
- If the pot pies are browning too quickly, you can cover them with foil to prevent the crust from burning.
- Make sure to leave enough space between the pot pies for the air to circulate. This will help them cook evenly.
- Check the pot pies periodically while they're cooking to make sure they're not burning or overcooking.
- If you want a crispier crust, brush the top of the pot pies with a beaten egg before cooking them in the air fryer.
