These crispy air fryer parmesan potatoes are the perfect side dish! You can make these delicious crispy potatoes in your air fryer with just a few simple ingredients like olive oil, parmesan cheese, and garlic powder.

I absolutely love making potatoes in the air fryer! Any type of potato comes out perfectly tender and slightly crispy from the air fryer; the high temperature of the air fryer makes cooking potatoes a breeze!

The whole family will love these air fryer parmesan potatoes; they are a delicious side dish! They are a great way to enjoy crispy, deep-fried potato flavor without actually deep frying in oil.

Air frying is the best way to cook potatoes to a perfect golden brown without all the excess oil of a deep fryer. It's a much healthier alternative!

The garlic parmesan air fryer potatoes have tons of flavor from the cheesy parmesan coating and garlic powder seasoning.

This easy air fryer parmesan potatoes recipe always comes out crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The potatoes cook up excellently in the air fryer, getting that crunchy exterior with just a small amount of oil. It's not quite as crispy as traditional french fries but has a similar taste with way less oil and calories.

I have made so many potato recipes in the air fryer; check out some of my favorite air fryer potato recipes! I love making Air Fryer Smashed Potatoes, Potatoes and Carrots in the Air Fryer and also Air Fryer Greek Potatoes!

Ingredients for Air Fryer Parmesan Potatoes

To make air fryer garlic parmesan potatoes, you'll need a handful of pantry staple ingredients:

  • Baby Potatoes: I prefer baby gold potatoes or red potatoes, but russet potatoes also work. The baby potatoes hold their shape better when air frying.
  • Olive Oil: Toss the potatoes with a small amount of olive oil before air frying. This gives them a crispy texture. Avocado oil is a healthy alternative if you have it.
  • Parmesan Cheese: The grated parmesan cheese and spices like garlic powder give these potatoes incredible flavor.
  • Seasonings: Garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, paprika, salt, and pepper are used in this recipe. These dry spices add delicious flavor to the potatoes. Use your favorite Italian seasoning blend if you have one.

See the recipe card for precise quantities and complete instructions.

✔️ Ingredient Substitutions

These potatoes are delicious as-is, but you can customize them by substituting a few ingredients:

  • Baby Potatoes: If you don't have small potatoes, use larger potatoes and cut them into smaller pieces!
  • Oil: You can use any vegetable oil that you have on hand that is suitable for the air fryer. Canola oil or avocado oil are great substitutes. Just make sure the oil has a high smoke point for safe use in the air fryer.
  • Cheese: Use regular shredded cheese like cheddar or mozzarella instead of parmesan. The nutty parmesan flavor will be different but still tasty!
  • Vegan Version: Omit the cheese for a vegan version. The potatoes will still get crispy from the oil. Or use any vegan parmesan that you like to make this recipe vegan-friendly!
  • Seasonings: Swap the garlic and onion powders for your own blend of dried herbs/spices.

📖 How to Make Air Fryer Parmesan Potatoes

Making these parmesan potatoes in the air fryer is so simple! Here's how to make this easy recipe:

Step 1: Slice the potatoes in half and place them in a large mixing bowl. For the best results, make sure the potato pieces are about the same size so they cook evenly.

Step 2: Drizzle over the olive oil and add the grated parmesan cheese and all of the spices. Toss until the potatoes are evenly coated.

Step 3: Place the seasoned potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Make sure not to overcrowd them.

Step 4: Set the air fryer temperature to 400°F (200°C) and cook for 20 minutes, shaking halfway through. The exact cooking time can vary depending on the size of your air fryer and potatoes.

Once the potatoes are golden brown and fork-tender, they’re ready to enjoy!

🥘 Variations

There are endless ways to spice up this basic air fryer potatoes recipe:

  • Add minced garlic or red pepper flakes for an extra kick.
  • Toss in chopped veggies like bell peppers, onions, or Brussels sprouts. Check out how to make Frozen Brussels Sprouts in the Air Fryer!
  • Top with crispy bacon pieces for a salty crunch.
  • Drizzle with melted butter, ranch dressing, or cheese sauce after cooking for some deluxe indulgence!
  • Season with BBQ spice, lemon pepper, rosemary, or chili powder for extra flavor.
  • Toss in Italian parsley, chives, or other fresh herbs right before serving for some fresh flavor and brightness!

Take this recipe and make it your own with fun add-ins and seasonings!

Any way you choose to serve them, these parmesan potatoes make an easy and delicious addition to weeknight dinners, cookouts, holidays, or special occasions. Thanks to the air fryer, you can enjoy them anytime with little effort!

⏲ Equipment

These air fryer parmesan potatoes are so simple to make, yet taste absolutely delicious. The best thing is that they cook entirely in the air fryer, so you don't have to use your oven or any other appliances.

I used two popular air fryers to test this recipe:

  • Instant Vortex Plus 6-Quart Air Fryer Oven. This air fryer has a useful viewing window that allows you to monitor the food as it cooks. This model always cooks food a bit quicker than my Cosori model, so adjust the cooking time as needed. This model is also great as it does the preheating for you and tells you when to turn over the food.
  • Cosori Max XL Large Cooker. It has a capacity of 5.8 quarts, which is quite large, so you can make large batches of parmesan potatoes! The basket is slightly smaller than my Instant Pot model but has very good hot air circulation.

Large Mixing Bowl: You will also need a large mixing bowl to make mixing the baby potatoes with the oil, parmesan, and seasonings easy.

🍶 Storing and Reheating Leftovers

If you end up with any leftover potatoes, they store easily:

  • Let the potatoes cool completely to room temperature, and then store leftovers in an airtight container.
  • Store in the fridge for 3-4 days.
  • Reheat in the air fryer at 400°F (200°C) for 4-5 minutes until warmed through. You can also reheat in the oven at 400°F for 3 - 5 minutes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

You can also reheat them in the microwave; just be aware they may lose their crispy texture.

🙋🏻‍♂️ FAQs

What kind of potatoes work best in the air fryer?

Small potatoes like baby gold potatoes or red potatoes work great. Larger russet potatoes can also be used when cut into smaller pieces.

Can I use pre-shredded parmesan cheese from the store?

Yes, pre-shredded parmesan will work fine in this recipe. Just avoid any parmesan with added fillers or anti-caking agents. If in doubt, use fresh parmesan and grate it fine.

How do I prevent overcrowding in the air fryer basket?

Cook potatoes in smaller batches if needed. Make sure there is space between pieces so air can circulate.

How do I know when the potatoes are fully cooked?

Check potatoes with a fork for tenderness. They should be golden brown and fork-tender when fully cooked.

Can I reheat leftovers?

Yes, leftovers reheat well in the air fryer or microwave. Just adjust time as needed to warm through.

👨🏻‍🍳 Top tips

  • If using larger potatoes, cut them into smaller pieces. Smaller potato pieces will make them extra crispy. Larger pieces will have a softer inside. Adjust the size according to your preference.
  • Give the basket a shake halfway through cooking. This helps ensure even browning.
  • Don't overcrowd the basket. Cook potatoes in batches if needed so they get crispy.
  • Add extra seasonings if desired. Italian herb blend, rosemary, chili powder, or cayenne would all be tasty additions.
  • Let the potatoes cool slightly before eating so they don't burn your mouth!
